AEM SPA Editor Migration: Turning a Deprecated Dependency into a Modern, Future-Proof Platform
Modernizing an AEM environment is not always about introducing something new. Sometimes, it starts with addressing what is already holding the platform back. For organizations with legacy SPA implementations, the challenge is to move forward without disrupting what is already working. Prime Force helps turn that challenge into a structured path toward a more sustainable AEM setup.
The Problem
Many organizations running Adobe Experience Manager still have one or more sites or applications built on the SPA Editor - a framework that has been deprecated by Adobe for years and no longer receives active support. Teams relying on it face a growing list of problems: unpatched bugs, poor compatibility with newer AEM core versions, limited editing capabilities for authors, and mounting risk every time a platform upgrade or security patch is due. What often started as a modern approach to building rich, app-like experiences on AEM has become a liability that blocks the rest of the platform from moving forward. Prime Force helps you retire the SPA Editor safely and migrate each site or application to the architecture that actually fits its purpose today.
What Is the SPA Editor?
The SPA Editor was Adobe's approach for authoring single-page applications built in React or Angular directly inside AEM. It allowed content authors to edit an SPA's content in the AEM UI, while the actual page was rendered client-side by the SPA framework, with content delivered through a JSON model API in the background.
It bridged AEM's authoring experience with modern frontend frameworks, but Adobe has since deprecated it in favor of newer approaches – leaving sites built on it running on an unsupported foundation.
The Solution
Why Migration Is Not One-Size-Fits-All
Not every SPA Editor site needs the same replacement. The right target depends on how the site is actually used - how content-heavy it is, how much interactivity it needs, and who authors it:
- SSR with standard AEM components - For content-driven sites where authoring flexibility and SEO matter most, we rebuild using standard, server-side rendered AEM components with the classic or fully supported editor experience.
- Universal Editor - For sites that benefit from a modern, flexible authoring UI while keeping strong AEM integration, we migrate to Adobe's current editing framework, built as the long-term successor across AEM's authoring tools.
- Content fragments as a generic content layer - For applications with complex frontend logic or multiple channels, we model content generically as content fragments and expose it via API, decoupling the frontend entirely from the rendering approach.
- Targeted assessment per site - We evaluate each site or app individually rather than applying one blanket solution, so effort and architecture match actual complexity.
- Incremental, low-risk delivery - Migrations are scoped and phased so sites go live independently, without a disruptive big-bang cutover.
Our Approach
- Discovery & assessment - We inventory affected sites and applications, assess their content model, custom components, and actual usage patterns, and group them by the target architecture that fits best.
- Target architecture design - For each group, we define the concrete migration path (SSR components, Universal Editor, or content fragment-based delivery) and the resulting component and content model.
- Migration & implementation - We rebuild and migrate site by site, reusing existing content and component logic wherever possible to keep effort proportionate.
- Validation & go-live - We test each migrated site against its original functionality and support a controlled go-live, site by site.
Why This Doesn't Have to Be a Big Project
Because the assessment groups sites by real complexity rather than treating every SPA Editor site as a from-scratch rebuild, many migrations turn out to be far more contained than expected - some sites move with moderate component-level rework rather than a full re-platforming effort. Scoping it properly upfront is what keeps the project size realistic.
