Legacy Challenge: Custom application to promote women's football

"In close collaboration, Prime Force developed a custom application to implement the Legacy Challenge for the Swiss Football Association (SFA). This initiative is part of the SFA’s 'Here to Stay' legacy programme and aims to promote the sustainable expansion of girls' and women's football in Switzerland beyond the home European Championship in 2025. Clubs can submit measures, earn points, and qualify for bronze, silver, or gold levels, as well as attractive prizes. The platform bundles these activities, makes them visible, and thus increases the motivation and engagement of the clubs.

Project Background

The Legacy Challenge enables clubs to easily submit their initiatives via the platform, upload supporting evidence, and take part in the competition. In doing so, existing efforts are made visible and new ideas are encouraged – with the ultimate goal of inspiring even more girls and women to get involved in football.

Prime Force supported the SFA in making this platform both functional and user-friendly. This included:

  • Designing the layout and screen design for the microsite.
  • Implementing the club platform for submitting and managing measures.
  • Developing the admin interface for the SFA to process submissions efficiently.
  • Backend functionalities that enable the upload of supporting evidence and the management of all data.

Close coordination between Prime Force and the SFA was crucial to the project's success. This ensured that the platform was tailored precisely to the needs of the clubs and provided efficient support for the initiative.

Key Features of the Solution

  • Submission of measures: Clubs can document their activities directly on the platform and upload supporting evidence.
  • Points and level system: The platform automatically calculates points and assigns clubs to Bronze, Silver, or Gold levels.
  • Admin dashboard: The SFA maintains an overview of all submissions, can verify data, and generate reports.
  • User-friendly design: Intuitive navigation and clear structures make the platform easy to use for both the clubs and the association.

Technical Implementation:

The application is based on a modern architecture using NuxtJS for the frontend and Spring Boot for the backend. This combination ensures high performance, scalability, and security.

Architecture and Security

The system follows established design principles, such as the MVC pattern and Repository pattern, ensuring a maintainable structure. NuxtJS server routes act as a secure middleware layer between the frontend and backend, ensuring that the Spring Boot backend is not publicly accessible. Authentication and token management are handled entirely on the server side.

Outstanding Technical Solutions:

  • Content Management via Markdown: Content pages are rendered dynamically using Markdown. This allows authors to adapt content easily and flexibly – without any prior technical knowledge.
  • Dynamic Form Builder: The backend provides configurations for dynamic forms, which are automatically rendered in the frontend. This allows new form fields and validations to be added flexibly without the need to modify the frontend code.
  • Security Architecture with Proxy Pattern: The NuxtJS server communicates exclusively with the backend. This ensures the Spring Boot backend remains not publicly accessible, significantly increasing security and protecting sensitive data from direct access.

Results

The first edition of the Legacy Challenge was a complete success: over 260 clubs submitted around 1,200 measures, including the founding of 103 new teams, 179 new female officials, and 129 newly trained female coaches. The platform made these activities visible, motivated clubs to launch further initiatives, and laid the foundation for the second challenge, which will start in autumn 2025.

“The collaboration with Prime Force has been an enormous help to us in implementing the Legacy Challenge efficiently and motivating the clubs. The platform is intuitive, reliable, and showcases the sheer variety of measures being taken.”Jan Staffelbach, Project Manager Legacy Club Coaching & Challenge, Swiss Football Association (SFA)
